๐จ NEW CHIP ALERT: The Fisher King Emerges!
Please extend your most suspicious of welcomes to The Fisher King! By decree of our own wonderfully questionable judgment, we're thrilled to unveil this brand-new character chip, joining the Excalibur campaign in all his fishy, kingly glory!
The Fisher King is a figure steeped in Arthurian legend, known as the last in a long line of British kings tasked with guarding the Holy Grail. He is both the protector and physical embodiment of his lands, but a grievous wound has rendered him impotent, and his kingdom barren. Unable to walk or ride a horse, he is sometimes depicted as spending his time fishing while he awaits a "chosen one" who can heal him and the kingdom. The healing of these wounds always depends upon the completion of a hero-knight's task.

Speaking of powerful figures, Excalibur is already rich with characters designed to sow seeds of distrust and misdirection, or protect your precious blades. We want to shine a spotlight on three formidable figures already present in Avalon:
๐ฎ Merlin (x1): The Master of Misdirection
Ability:"Anyone with any Blade must shout: 'I shall be king!' (Or queen.)"
Merlin is the master of verbal misdirection! This ability forces anyone holding a sword to loudly declare their ambition, making it a fantastic tool for creating distrust and uncertainty around the table. You'll know who holds a sword but not necessarily THE sword, making it nearly impossible to determine who truly holds the legendary blade.
๐ Mordred (x1): The Ultimate Schemer
Ability:"Peek at a player's hand. You may choose to swap hands with that player."
Mordred allows you to gain critical intelligence and then potentially execute a devastating swap. You can peek at any player's hand, giving you invaluable knowledge about who has Excalibur or the Cursed Blade. This is a powerful move to acquire Excalibur, stick an opponent with the Cursed Blade, or simply disrupt their carefully laid plans.
๐ Uther (x1): The Direct Approach
Ability:"Whosoever has Excalibur must give it to another player."
When you play Uther, anyone holding the legendary Excalibur must immediately hand it over to another player. This powerful ability cuts through all the bluffing and subterfuge, allowing you to see where it is. There's no negotiation, no trickery - Excalibur simply changes hands if it is in someone's hand that is.

By our own mischievous delight, we are incredibly excited to announce a brand-new character chip joining Excalibur's roster during this campaign: Queen Caelia!
Inspired by Richard Johnson's romance Tom a Lincoln, Caelia is a legendary Fairy Queen who rules "Fairy Land," an island populated entirely by women who have famously slain their warmongering men. She is known for begging Tom and his companions to stay on her island to help repopulate it.

Speaking of powerful women, Excalibur is already rich with characters designed to sow seeds of distrust and misdirection around the table. We want to shine a spotlight on three formidable ladies already present in Avalon who can completely flip the script on your opponents:
๐ง Lady of the Lake (x1)
Ability: Pick left or right. All players simultaneously pass their hands in that direction.

This enigmatic character makes all players simultaneously pass their entire hand of chips in a chosen direction (left or right). It's the perfect tool for disrupting carefully crafted strategies and creating chaos when you need it most.
๐ฎ Morgana (x1)
Ability: Draw 2 chips, then you may choose 1 of them to play and resolve immediately.ย

A true sorceress of surprise, Morgana lets you draw two chips and, if you so desire, immediately choose one to play and resolve. This grants an immediate, unexpected action, allowing you to react to the table or launch a sudden, devastating move before anyone can anticipate it.
๐ธ Gwenevere (x1)
Ability: Anyone who has ANY sword places them in 1 region you choose. Then mix up the region.

If you want to hide the legendary sword or curse, Gwenevere will even the playing field! Upon playing her, anyone holding Excalibur, the Toy Sword, or the Cursed Blade must place them in one region you choose, which is then mixed up. This is a fantastic way to stash Excalibur in Avalon or stick an unsuspecting opponent with the Cursed Blade.

We have an important update about a previously unlockedย Deluxe Excalibur funding quest, AND another Chip side quest that brings another character into the game!
๐ฒ Funding Quest Change: FSC Certification for All Editions
We need to make an important change to one of our funding quests, and we want to be transparent about what's happening.
The Change:
Unfortunately, after discussions with our manufacturer, the custom bagasse paper color for the Deluxe Edition is no longer feasible. Rather than simply removing this goal, we're replacing it with a different upgrade.
The Replacement:
FSC Certified Paper and Wood for BOTH Deluxe & Collector's Editions!
What is FSC Certification?
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit organization that promotes responsible management of the world's forests via timber certification.
What this means for Excalibur: FSC certification comes with additional costs compared to standard materials, and it ensures that the wood and paper in your game come from responsibly managed forests. These forests are maintained to preserve biological diversity while supporting local people's and workers' livelihoods. The certification process holds forest management to strict environmental, social, and economic standards, making this a more sustainable choice for those who value responsible sourcing.
โซ "Now stand aside, worthy adversary!"ย
The community has spoken, and we're adding another legendary character to Excalibur! Thanks to Jeremy Wilhm's suggestion to include the Black Knight from Arthurian legend and Coryatt's brilliant thematic suggestion, we're bringing this iconic character to life.
๐ก๏ธ The Black Knight
This mysterious and formidable knight appears in Yvain, the Knight of the Lion, summoned by Sir Calogrenant after disturbing an enchanted spring. Though traditionally unnamed or known by other titles, he embodies the archetype of the relentless guardian.
But wait - there's more! Inspired by Coryatt's suggestion, we couldn't resist adding a playful nod to Monty Python and the Holy Grailโs Black Knight, whose comically unyielding attitude puts a hilarious twist on the same chivalric ideal.
Ability: YOU TELL US! That's right, we need your help again to come up with abilities to test for this new GOLD Character.ย
"'Tis but a scratch!" - We're sure this character will be anything but a flesh wound to your strategy!

We're here to delve deeper into the arsenal of trickery and backstabbery that awaits you in Excalibur! Let's unmask (or un-helmet?) a few Gold characters!ย
To aid you in your quest for the legendary sword, or to cunningly pass off the dreaded Cursed Blade, you'll encounter chips with powers of various Arthurian legends. Let's shine a light on some of those who sit at the round table:
๐ ARTHUR (ร1): The Once and Future King
Ability: Anyone who has Excalibur, the Cursed Blade and/or the Toy Sword must hold them out facedown. Arthur blindly steals 1, then returns the others.

Strategic Insight:Arthur is a powerful tool for directly engaging with players suspected of holding a sword. You can use Arthur to find out where the swords are, demanding players reveal their blades facedown and allowing you to steal one. This creates a moment of high tension and can be a fantastic way to acquire Excalibur or force someone to take back the Cursed Blade! But you'd better be confident in who has what!
Pro Tip: Use Arthur when you're certain someone has all three swords - the odds might be worth the risk!
๐ก๏ธ GAWAIN (ร1): The Demanding Knight
Ability: Command one player to give you a sword. If they have ANY swords, they must give one sword (of their choice) to you.

Strategic Insight:Gawain offers a direct and assertive approach to acquiring a sword. If you suspect a particular player is holding Excalibur, the Toy Sword, or the Cursed Blade, Gawain allows you to directly demand it from them. This chip is all about putting pressure on a single opponent and forcing their hand (or rather, their blade!).
Pro Tip: Perfect for targeting that quiet player who's been suspiciously avoiding trades!
๐ฟ GREEN KNIGHT (ร1): The Table Turner
Ability: Anyone who has a sword must give them to you.

Strategic Insight: The Green Knight is an incredibly influential chip that can shift the balance at the table. If you play this chip, any player (or players) holding Excalibur, the Toy Sword, or the Cursed Blade must give them to you. This is a bold move that guarantees you control of any active swords, potentially setting you up for victory or shameful defeat. You might even paint a target on your back!
Pro Tip: Save this for late in the game when you're ready to make your final move OR to gain information when unsure where the swords are!

The response to our community-designed character has been absolutely incredible! We've received some truly brilliant suggestions for Robyn of Roxley's ability in the comments from our last update.
The creativity you've shown is outstanding - from Robin Hood-inspired stealing mechanics to clever misdirection abilities that perfectly capture the spirit of both the legendary outlaw and our mischievous game.
What's Next: We're now carefully reviewing all the fantastic ideas and will be playtesting our favorites to see which ability creates the most delightful chaos at the table. This process will take us a little time to get right, but we'll update you once we've landed on Robyn's final ability!

We've been listening to your feedback from our previous update, and we're unlocking ALL remaining planned funding quests because the campaign is doing exceptionally well, and we want to address your concerns directly!
๐น Why These Quests Matter - From James:
Our lead creative designer, James, explains the philosophy behind our funding approach and why these upgrades enhance the Excalibur experience:
The Reality of Premium Production: Quality upgrades come with real costs. When we work with manufacturers, they present us with numerous options - different paper weights, finishes, materials, and components like magnets, each with its own price point.
We designed Excalibur to be excellent from day one, but we started with specifications that would be achievable regardless of campaign size. Now that the campaign is exceeding our expectations, we can afford to implement the premium upgrades we always hoped to include - thicker materials, custom finishes, and enhanced components that make the game even more special.
The Bottom Line: Every quest represents a genuine quality enhancement that our success allows us to afford, while the core game remains complete and amazing at our base funding level.

"TOY SWORD" - The Third Blade Inspired by Jeremiah Fear's brilliant suggestion! This clever addition creates a third sword option that adds even more deduction and misdirection to the game. As Jeremiah noted: "I feel a 3rd neutral sword chip would be cool... I mean, there are 3 swords in the box..."
"ROBYN OF ROXLEY" - Community-Designed Character Thanks to Rick's creative suggestion: "I know the time line doesn't match but you could include a special chip for backers that features Robin Hood. Instead of naming it Robin of Loxley you can call it Lobin of Roxley."
We loved this idea so much that we're adding Robyn of Roxley! And since we just so happen to have a Robyn of Roxley on our team, this was absolutely meant to be.
